Physical Education

Intent

At Cravenwood Primary Academy, We aim to develop pupils who will be physically active and can flourish in a range of different physical activities. The aims of our PE curriculum are to develop pupils who:

  • Are willing to practise skills in a range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams, and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance;
  • Have and maintain high levels physical fitness;
  • Lead a healthy lifestyle which is achieved by eating sensibly, being aware of the dangers of drugs, smoking and alcohol and exercising regularly;
  • Are able to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and have an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being;
  • Take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others;
  • Employ imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography;
  • Are able to improve their own and others’ performance;
  • Can work independently for extended periods of time without the need for guidance or support;
  • Have a keen interest in PE - a willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extracurricular sport;
  • Can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water.

Implementation

  • Our PE curriculum is inclusive and varied, and long-term plans ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met
  • Children are taught PE twice a week, We have selected to use the GetSet4PE curriculum as this is planned through vertical strands from Eary Years to Year 6, with core knowledge and skills sequenced for a mastery approach.
  • Once a term, children also experience PE lessons through City in the Community.
  • The curriculum is further enhanced by the inclusion of after school clubs, lunch clubs and tournaments, with the idea of creating links and further connections of Physical Education with other schools in the area and wider parts of Manchester.
  • With the development of the Sport Leadership Team, children have the opportunity to help create, lead and organise sporting activities during break times and lunch.
  • As an active school, we aim to ensure that the children participate in active lessons outside of their regular Physical Education learning. This involves incorporating moments within class-based learning where the children can be active and further their curriculum links through physical movement.
  • We follow the guidelines set by the National Curriculum to ensure we offer a range of Physical Education that allows each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.

Swimming

  • All children in Year 4 will attend swimming lessons, all year, provided by the local council. They will be taught how to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a 25m distance, learn a variety of different swimming strokes and how to perform a safe self-rescue in different water conditions.

Impact

  • Our Physical Education Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression from EYFS through to KS2 with the onward development into KS3.
  • Embedded into the curriculum, there are opportunities for formative assessment, this helps to drive and continually improve learning. Through this regular ongoing assessment, learning is moulded to the needs of each child through differentiated activities, adult support, and peer on peer coaching which provides a level of challenge that is stimulating for all pupils.
  • Through our Physical Education curriculum, we assess children against the National Curriculum, where children can be assessed at: Working Towards Age Related Expectations, Working At Age Related Expectations and Working Above Age Related Expectations that is known as Greater Depth.
