Intent

At Cravenwood Primary Academy, we equip all pupils with the skills to:

  • confidently talk, listen and think about feelings and relationships
  • we actively coach children to use their “big voice” when in a situation they don’t like
  • it prepares pupils to play active roles as citizens and develop healthier and safer lifestyles in British society
  • it promotes the importance of living in and looking after their environment
  • it develops children's understanding of good relationships and respecting differences between people and communities
  • it ensures our pupils form and maintain healthy and caring relationships into their adult lives
  • it develops the whole child and their talents and prepares pupils to be responsible, resilient and determined adults
  • it promotes the importance of British Values, and teaches them to become independent and responsible members of our school, the local community and wider society

At Cravenwood Primary we recognise the importance of having a holisitic approach and we ensure our Relationship and Sex Education curriculum is part of our PSHE curriculum.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is structured to include five overarching themes.

•       Mental and Emotional Health

•       Keeping Safe

•       Relationships and Sex Education

•       Health Lifestyles

•       Living in the Wider World

The themes run throughout school and are taught through regular discrete weekly lessons.

These themes are also taught and practised through many of the daily interactions that members of our school family have with each other. Regular Class Family meetings are held where children feel safe to connect and solve problems. They often take place in circle time settings and follow the P.E.A.C.E process. This Conscious Discipline tool is used to help solve current problems and topics which are relevant for a Class Family.

The start to each school day consists of an activity to unite, to connect, to disengage stress and an activity to commit. It builds connections and fosters a sense of safety and it actively teaches pupils to handle and reduce stress. As part of our daily practice at Cravenwood teachers plan for and include cooperative learning strategies which actively promotes kinder and more caring pupils, who are also assertive against anti-social behaviours. This is coupled with teachers viewing conflict as an opportunity for learning and assisting pupils through the use of the Time Machine.

PSHE is also delivered through class assemblies, where children learn about the achievements of inspirational people from Britain and the wider world, giving them opportunities to see what is possible and to learn that with hard work and determination, that dreams can be achieved.

Impact

A Cravenwood pupil, through the PSHE curriculum, values what we have in common, as well as what makes us different. They have a genuine willingness to participate and cooperate well with others and are able to resolve conflicts effectively. They are the leaders of their own learning and have a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them. All children are provided with the opportunity to be leaders within their class family, influencing change.

Children have the ability to be reflective about their own beliefs and perspective on life. They have knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values. Children use their imaginations and creativity in their learning and have a willingness to reflect on their own experiences. Children have a strong understanding of, and are able to, recognise the difference between right and wrong and can reflect on the consequences of their behaviour and actions.

Our PSHE curriculum is planned in a way which promotes the cultural capital of all our children. They know how to improve their health and wellbeing and can talk confidently about how to lead healthy lives. Children know the ways in which to keep themselves and others safe and know who they can turn to when they need help.

Pupils at Cravenwood have a good understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Our PSHE curriculum works alongside our School Family, which empowers children to successfully learn and internalise lifelong skills.
