Remote Learning FAQs for Parents

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

You can access live lessons everyday on your child's year group page. Please go to the pupil tab and select your year group, there you will find everything you need for your child's learning.

Following the first few days of immediate education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum remotely as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make the following adaptations:

  • For art and design technology, we have made adaptations to the practical parts to make sure that children can complete tasks using what they have at home.
  • For science, we have adapted some of the practical work for the same reasons as in art and design technology.
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education provision (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 = 3 hours

Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 = 3-4 hours

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We use Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Teams to support online learning.

Your child has their own Office 365 account for emails.

Your child has been shown how to use an iPad and how to access Teams.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to deliver remote education:

For Year 1 -6

  • Live teaching (online lessons)
  • Follow-up learning using Microsoft Sway
  • Reading through Oxford Owl

For Nursery and Reception:

  • Live and pre-recording teaching of phonics and small group work.
  • Information for parents to support learning at home, including information on Microsoft Sway.
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • If your child does not have access to appropriate technology, they will be offered an iPad.
  • You will be given a time to collect these.
  • You will be asked to sign an agreement upon collection.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home
  • Your child is expected to complete the work set.
  • Where your child is invited to a live lesson, they are expected to attend. Where they do not attend, we will make a phone call to you to ensure that this happens.
  • We expect parents to support their child’s learning, including ensuring that they are available and online for any live teaching.
  • It is just like being in a normal lessons in school. If you have a problem, your teacher will help you.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
  • Morning registers will be checked every morning until 9:30am
  • There will be daily live teaching sessions which will allow teachers to check on how well your child is learning.
  • We may offer smaller group sessions to support some pupils.
  • If your child is not online when we expect them to be, we will make a phone call home to check.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

The best feedback is verbal within the live lesson. In addition to this, children will complete quizzes along with their class work.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to support my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with SEND, may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • If your child has special educational needs and/or disabilities, we will speak to you directly about their support. They will continue to be supported by the adults who work with them in school through live teaching or additional recorded information. This work will match what they would access in school as far as is practicable. There might be some circumstances where this is not possible, but we will speak to you directly about this.
  • For younger children in Nursery and Reception, we will invite them to some live teaching in small groups for phonics and small group work. We will help you to get them online for this. We will also send information about activities you can do at home to support your child. This will include some pre-recorded lessons and stories.

Remote provision for self-isolating pupils

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

If your child is not in school because they are self-isolating, we will follow the same approach as above. We will contact you to discuss our child’s learning at least twice a week.

Thank you for your support at this challenging time. We are immensely proud of the response of our school community to these unique circumstances.
