Geography

Intent

  • At Cravenwood, we want Geography to inspire, in all pupils, a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them throughout their life.
  • We aim to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and build upon a pupil’s sense of place.
  • We want children to think like geographers by developing their geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways.
  • Our curriculum is designed to match the full range of pupils’ needs and ensures highly effective continuity and progression in their learning. The key concepts and skills are embedded throughout planning, teaching and learning.

Implementation

Geography at Cravenwood is taught in blocks throughout the year so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Each cycle of lessons is carefully planned for building progression in knowledge and skills and with an end point in mind.

  • Existing knowledge is checked at the beginning of each unit through a pre-learning quiz. This ensures that teachers are informed of children’s starting points.
  • Tasks are designed to provide appropriate challenge to all learners.
  • Learning is reviewed every lesson through retrieval starters.
  • At the end of each topic, learning is reviewed through a post-learning quiz.

Daily dashboard sessions are taught three to four times a week in every class. The aim of these sessions are to increase cultural capital for our children and allow them to know and experience more about the wider world.

Impact

Our Geography curriculum is well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum , they are thought to be making good or better progress. The impact of our pupils learning in Geography can be measured in many ways:

  • Formative assessment in each lesson enables teachers to reflect on whether the intended outcome has been met or whether any additional lessons or adaptations to future planning are needed.
  • A post-learning quiz is provided for every unit. These questions aim to assess whether pupils have learned the core knowledge for that unit. The results of these quizzes will enable teachers to fill gaps and address misconceptions before moving on.
  • Discussions with pupils about their Geography topic as well as learning in their books allows us to assess how much curriculum content is secure. These conversations are used most effectively to determine whether pupils are knowing more and remembering more.
