Art

Intent

  • At Cravenwood Primary Academy, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • Children will learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.
  • It allows children to develop and extend skills as artists and gives them the opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.
  • Children are encouraged to experiment and view mistakes as a positive part of the artistic process, whilst being able to reflect on their work and make changes when necessary.
  • As pupils progress, they will develop an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our society.

Implementation

Teachers are provided with an additional three planning days per year to plan their curriculum alongside the Art subject leader. As part of this planning process, teachers will understand and plan the following:

  • A cycle of lessons for Art, which carefully plans for progression and depth
  • A low stakes quiz which is tested regularly to support learners’ ability to block learning and increase space in the working memory
  • Adaptations to learning to ensure lessons are inclusive and deep
  • Trips and visiting experts who will enhance the learning experience
  • A means to display and celebrate the pupils’ artwork in their class
  • Children will sketch and explore medias and their uses in a sketchbook which will progress through their school years, allowing children to see their own progression and reflect on their prior work and learning.

Impact

At Cravenwood, our Art curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression. We measure the impact of our curriculum through:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
  • Opportunities for work to be displayed beyond the classroom, such as on corridors, in a progressive way through the year groups
  • Post learning quizzes that measure the understanding of the unit
  • Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.

Our Art curriculum is also planned in a way that promotes cultural capital. All children will learn the same skills and have the opportunity to realise their talents and develop their character through self-expression. Children will be exposed to a wide range of experiences that will enhance their skills development and provide them with knowledge about a wider range of culture.
